eBooks

Define eBook. What does it include? eBook defined broadly as any electronic text that couldn’t easily be described as something else. (That is, a web page would not be an eBook.) Examples are epub files, PDF files, etc.

Some people use eBook to refer to eReader devices

eBooks are files, eReaders are hardware.

Sony Readers, Nook, and Kobo work with Overdrive. Sony Readers and Nooks are preferred.

Kindle is proprietary to Amazon. Overdrive books will not work on a Kindle.

EPUB is the emerging standard for eBooks.

Kindles will not support EPUB.

UNO has Kindles and loads them with books purchased from Amazon.

But if a patron wants to purchase an eReader for the purposes of using your library’s eBooks (primarily Overdrive), suggest Nook or Sony Reader. These are the most library-friendly devices.

Download library’s eBook for two weeks, then the file self-deletes. There might be waiting lists, as these eBooks, like print books, can only be used by one person at a time. (This is a licensing restriction, not a technology restriction.)

Length of loan period can be determined by individual libraries. Omaha Public Library’s eBook loan period is two weeks. Some other libraries have one week, with eBooks from NLC.

DRM, expiration dates, etc. all apply to eBooks, just like with NLC’s downloadable audiobooks.

What are the benefits of eBooks?

–Don’t have to take a lot of books when traveling

–Searchable

–Saving physical space if one has no storage space

–Can make any book a large print book

–Some eBooks have text-to-speech capabilities

–Collection development–potentially cheaper than print books

–Increases privacy–people see the case of an eReader, not the cover of a bodice-ripper (erotica is number one selling genre in eBooks)

Eyestrain issues? eInk (Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader) vs. LCD (iPad, smartphones, laptops) — eInk is not backlit, so reduces eyestrain. But physical print is still king for visual clarity.

The jury is still out whether eBooks are more green than print. Manufacturing of print books vs. manufacturing of eReader devices.

Downsides of eBooks?

–Existing collection bundles of eBooks might not be appropriate for all libraries (e.g.: NLC’s collections are geared more toward academic libraries)

–Competing formats, standards, and suppliers

–Not always portable. For example, NetLibrary books can be downloaded to computer, but not necessarily to a reader.

–DRM issues–do you actually own it or are you paying for access only

–Power–battery may go dead

–Travel issues–must turn off eReaders during airplane takeoffs and landings

–Difficulty of sharing–Nook has unusual feature, allows a one-time loan to one friend, for a limited period; no other eReader offers this

iPad and others mimic the turning of pages. If eBooks are superior to print, why are they mimicking print?

Books as art. Some books are things of physical beauty. This can not be replicated electronically.

Print books stay around a really long time. How many 20-year-old computer files do you still have that you can read?

About half of the libraries represented in the room were loaning eBooks of some variety. Only UNO was loaning actual devices (Kindles and iPads).

Michael Sauers requests a total of the amount UNO has spent on Kindle eBooks, compared to how much it would have cost us to purchase those same titles in print.

For popular fiction, eBook may cost the same as hardback, so eBooks are not necessarily cheaper.

55 libraries are part of Overdrive consortium. Some small libraries circulate thousands of titles per year, for use on patrons’ devices, so in some communities, eBooks have really taken off. A lot depends on the community.

If you buy the print book, you have to pay for the print book, the cataloging, and the physical processing. If you buy the eBook, you have to pay for the book, the devices, and the cataloging. The cost of the devices may end up being less than the cost of the processing, once enough eBooks have been purchased.

Library of the future: a desk with a small bookcase in the back. That’s all the physical space you need.

Amazon tried to establish $9.99 as the set price for an eBook. Publishers rebelled.

With James Patterson’s latest book, the print book was actually cheaper than the eBook. Amazon discounted the hardback, but they couldn’t discount the electronic book because that price was set by the publisher.

eTextbooks becoming more popular. Some professors and some universities mandate that textbooks will be on Kindle, not in print. Weight issue–textbooks are very heavy, so eBooks are desirable. Competing standards might be a counter-issue–what if different professors’ textbooks are available for incompatible eReader devices?

Pictures on eInk devices are only black and white (grayscale). Low resolution sometimes reduces quality. LCD devices can display full color.

eInk is little tiny electrified dots which turn the light or dark side up depending on charge. Battery power only used when changing a page; no power consumed while displayed page remains static. LCD screens consume power constantly; drain batteries much more quickly.

Must view library as a business. Give patrons what they are looking for.

Technology is wide open to making hyperbooks, but most eBooks are still just “the book.” It has not been much done, but the technology exists to incorporate audio and video into books. Hyperlinks seem like a natural fit for “Choose Your Own Adventure” type books.

Getting individual eBooks in a library setting is daunting, when most things come in packages and bundles.

Can’t interlibrary loan eBooks. (Licensing issue.)

If you buy books for one type of eReader, you can not easily transfer them to another eReader.

[Ten minute break]

Blue Sky

What would your library be like in five years, if you didn’t have to worry about budget or staffing? (Blue skies ahead.)

Printing problems solved. Everything works.

New shelves. (One library has non-adjustable shelves.)

eCookBook on Nook

Digital libraries conference in Australia, “Libraries in Ten Years.”

Some libraries are doing away with physical collections. Some are doing away with physical buildings altogether. Going all-electronic.

Even if there’s no books in the building, you can still do storytime and community events. Library could still exist as a place.

For storytime, eBooks on the big screen.

There are 3D TVs now, and video game controllers that track your motions. Probably just a matter of time before large displays in stores and libraries are like walls you walk up to and manipulate with a few waves of your hand.

Libraries are about community. Even if you lost the physical structure, you would still want to maintain something so that you could still have the community atmosphere and the programming that libraries provide.

Blue Sky — people understand that libraries are more than books. Books are our brand. But last year, libraries circulated more DVDs than Netflix. Blue sky future is where the community understands what the library really does for the community.

PR capsules–”Did you know…?” “Visit your library.”

It takes a person to explain how to sort through the Google results to find the wheat in the chaff. People don’t know what they don’t know.

Need to promote beyond books–storytimes, community events, volunteer opportunities. Get people in the door.

Let people pick the books the library orders.

The library is a business. Yes and no. We’re competing in a business-oriented world. In most instances, a public library is still a government service. We’re kind of in a middle ground.

We’ll need to think about a lot of things differently. Embedded librarians. In the past, we had liaison librarians. Now they’re putting the librarians in the departments or agencies they serve. Instead of a librarian in a library office, being a liaison to X department elsewhere in the city, that librarian’s office is in X department’s headquarters, and they work directly with that agency. Librarian no longer headquartered inside the library.

Our business in making connections. Connections with business, connections with our community. That is the message we need to convey (both to our patrons and to our colleagues).

Find the people who control your budget (e.g.: city council members, etc.), find out what they’re interested in, do the research, get the info, then pass it along to them. Don’t wait for them to ask. Do it unsolicited. Create the connection.

Local connections are the future.

We have been adapting. Libraries wouldn’t have coffeeshops if bookstores hadn’t done it first.

Hire a promoter, someone to promote your library. Librarians suck at marketing. We don’t have to, though. There are probably people on staff who have those skills, but their jobs don’t include that duty. Allow them–everyone on staff–to promote the library.

Library as “third place.” Not those word, but that concept dates back to Carnegie.

It’s really hard to think “blue sky” when you’re having a lot of trouble running in place now. It’s hard to think five years out when you’re having trouble with next month.

If you had more money, what would you like to provide?

In small communities, there is always someone–a small group–who shows up to everything and who knows everyone. Connect with those people.

Start a book club.

In a very small town, it might be possible to send Christmas cards to your patrons.

When a new baby is born, send postcard every month with some kind of library resource that would be of use (to the parents early on, and later to the children when they’re old enough) for maybe the first five years.

If your community doesn’t have a senior center, start some activities for seniors.

Gaming night to draw in teens. These sometimes bring in all ages, from little kids to grandparents.

Some patrons come to the library to use the computer and nothing else.

If books are our brand, but people are not coming to the library for books anymore, but rather for other programs and services, why are we still measuring our success by circulation stats?

Guerilla displays–put up displays briefly (just a couple of displays) in places you don’t normally have displays.

Tie your library displays to your programming. If you’re having a gaming night, make a display of hint guides. If you’re showing Finding Nemo, put up a display on fish. Make sure the activities and collections are thematically connected.

Overload

Information overload. That feeling that there’s way to much coming at you, that you can’t handle it all.

How do you handle it? What tools do you use? How do you keep track of it?

A human filter–a friend or colleague who keeps you apprised of new developments. (For example, someone tracks info that comes from NLC–separate folders for Christa Burns, Michael Sauers, etc.–and looks in those folders every week.)

Set a specific time every week–make an appointment with yourself, so it’s blocked out in your calendar–to do whichever task you’re having trouble keeping up with.

Give yourself permission to miss stuff. (Not deadlines.) For example, give yourself permission to not read about technology for one day while you catch up on everything else.

Email, RSS feeds, and Twitter are Michael Sauers’ tools for keeping up with everything.

Don’t use your inbox as a To Do list. Zero out your inbox regularly.

Feed bankruptcy. If you’re gone for a week, come back and mark all RSS feeds read. Don’t try to slog through them.

Wrap-up.

What did you hear today that you want to make sure everyone remembers? What ideas do you want to share with everyone?

On a moveable-type sign that everyone in town sees, put, “Visit your library.”

Put up a map of the United States and mark where you’ve been and invite patrons to mark everyplace they’ve been.

Challenge students to be in the “million word club”–to read a million words in a year. (See AR Bookfind.)

Search YouTube for Inbox Zero for the original talk on zeroing out your inbox.

Coffee Hour. (Book clubs usually draw only women. Coffee hours draw both men and women.)

First Reader Society Book Club. Stickers in library books. First student to read a book can write their name on it. (Is this a violation of patron privacy? Not if it’s voluntary.)

Patron reading lists. Patrons can see what they’ve read previously. (Not a violation of patron privacy as long as library staff can not see this information.)

Definition of Blue Sky: What would your library be in five years if you had no financial concerns, personnel concerns, etc.?

We would like to solve problems with technology, facilities, etc. (broken printers, need new shelves)

All-electronic libraries?

Storytime and other services will still be needed if books are all electronic. (Storytime could be done on a large screen?)

Librarians’ skills would be different in an all-electronic library.

You would still want to maintain some community atmosphere for a library.

Michael’s blue sky vision would be people understanding that we are more than just books.

People don’t know what they don’t know. People don’t realize the information they are missing by relying on Google.

OCLC’s Geek the Library campaign

We have to think outside the box to market our services.

Is a library a business? Yes and no. In some ways, we need to operate like a business, but we are different.

We have to think of different models of delivering services. For example, academic libraries have embedded librarians, who have offices in the departments that they work with. Do we need the reference desk anymore?

Are we in the business of making connections?

Prove your worth to the decision-makers in your community. Find out what subjects matter to the people in charge of your budget and send them alerts about those subjects.

Connecting with your community is more important for smaller libraries, and also might be easier.

Libraries have more competition than they used to have (television, Internet).

Some people in libraries have marketing skills, but that’s not their official job. They may not have permission to do it. Organizations should give all their employees permission to do marketing.

Clarkson Library has big budget, but little use. If you had money, what would you do to increase use?

book clubs

go to local groups and ask them why they don’t come

build relationship with school libraries

send out Christmas cards to patrons (North Loup Public Library is going to do this.)

Seward Public Library sends postcards to new parents with literacy tips periodically for five years

make sure that the hours you are open are the hours when people need your services

How do you get people to check out your materials once they are in the library?

Lincoln City Libraries does “guerrilla displays” – put up displays for a few days in locations where there are not usually displays

Put up displays of items on the topics of your programs and events

Put up displays that

Defining ebooks – text designed to be read on an electronic screen. (Not audiobooks)

eReaders are the devices used to read eBooks. Some people call these eBooks, but a distinction should be made.

Which eReaders work for Overdrive eBooks? Sony Reader, Barnes and Noble Nook, Kobo eReader. Not Kindles!

Kindles do not use epub format for their eBooks.

When it comes to patrons using library eBooks on their own devices, Sony Reader and Kobo are most library-friendly. The Nook is the next most library-friendly. Kindles are library-hostile. (Michael’s opinion)

Omaha Public Library has Overdrive eBooks for download. They stay on your device for 2 weeks. They will not disappear until you sync your eReader with your computer.

Blio – software designed to be used on any device

e-ink vs. LCD display: e-ink causes less eyestrain and has longer battery life

http://www.biguniverse.com/ Access to eBooks for children. Available via subscription.

Benefits of eBooks:

Easier to carry a lot of books with you at once

Searchable

Ability to alter the size of the text

Some devices have text-to-speech capability

Potentially cheaper

Increased privacy – others don’t know what you’re reading

More environmentally friendly? (Have to take into account manufacturing of the devices)

Downsides to eBooks:

Books available in collections might not be what your patrons want

Competing standards, vendors, formats, etc.

Do you really own eBooks or are you buying access to them?

Difficulty of sharing (The Nook has sharing feature – can loan a book for a week to one friend)

Need for battery power

Miss out on the physical experience of interacting with a print book

May not be able to access the files as technology changes

NLC has a recorded session about UNO circulating Kindles.

Economics of eBook publishing – they are not always cheaper than print books.

e-textbooks:

colleges requiring students to purchase Kindle version of textbooks?

textbook companies cutting deals with eReader providers

Technology behind eReaders:

e-ink only uses power when you change the screen; LCD displays contantly use power

e-ink is not backlit; you can’t read in the dark, but you can see better in sunlight

Right now, eBooks basically replicate print books – will the technology be used to do more (add videos, etc.)?

eBooks licensing complicates the process of getting a book into your collection. In some ways, eBooks are more work than print books, just different work. Getting individual eBooks presents different challenges than purchasing collections does.

Smartphones, tablets, etc.

Some say that by 2015 the majority of internet use will be from smartphones and other mobile deviced, rather than from laptop and desktop computers.

Some libraries using Meebo for instant message reference services.

Lincoln City Libraries is using Mosio for text message reference. No software installation necessary; completely web-based. Has built-in statistic generation. One workstation is logged into Mosio, and different staff rotate through shifts on the Mosio station.

Mosio sends a “librarian will respond within 5-10 minutes” auto-reply upon receiving a text. With Meebo, there’s nothing. Need to respond immediately. Sometimes a problem when librarian is helping a face-to-face patron at the moment a Meebo request pops up.

Some ILSs will text a call number to a user’s mobile.

UNO has a webcam to show how long the line is at the Library Café.

Any libraries using their own apps? Lincoln City has developed their own cataloging app.

Question: why would anyone bother with an app when a mobile site is available?

Make it simple and barebones as a starting place, then see what people ask for and work on those features.

QR Codes. Can print them out, stick them at various locations in the library. Can scan with smartphone camera to get link to whatever URL is encoded. For example, can put a QR code with library hours, branches, and locations on the front door of building. Very easy to create these–QR code generator websites create unique codes on demand. e.g.: http://qrcode.kaywa.com

The smartphones of today will be the discount phones of three years from now. It won’t be long until these are in the hands of the majority of our users.

Smaller communities see a few Blackberries, but not a lot of smartphones.

Smaller communities still working on establishing wi-fi. In Schuyler, probably only the library and Subway have wi-fi.

Perhaps we need to put our QR codes in Subway, if that’s where the techy users are.

Does your wi-fi bleed outside? Some people park in the parking lot to use library wi-fi without going in building.

Likewise, some people with smartphones stand in library entryway to check their email, then leave without entering building. Hard to count these users in library statistics. But they are users who should be counted.

When there are a lot of users, it slows down the staff internet.

In Schuyler, possibility of issuing all students their own laptops. If that happens, library wi-fi will not be able to handle the bandwidth demand.

Some students using their phone to connect to library’s internet, to avoid asking for parental permission to use computer.

How will the coming changes to the E-Rate laws affect libraries? (E-Rate is help for small libraries for internet, telephone, and equipment. Many rules attached–e.g.: must have filtering software. Was originally intended to help little libraries get connected. Later, some big libraries applied, as well. Primarily for educational institutions. Significant discounts available to libraries that use this help.)

Some people come to libraries for help setting up their mobile devices.

Policy: library staff should not touch anyone’s computer. Library can put together instructions on what to check, but they can not touch the keys.

Mobile device–what exactly does that mean? Squishy definition is a device that you can hold in one hand and connect to the internet. Pocket-sized/handheld computing device.

Newer phones can be used as a wi-fi hotspot.

“My-fi” is a little box about the size of a credit card–connects via cell phone–to create a wi-fi hotspot. It has a service fee attached.

Some newer cars have constant internet connections.

Advantages and disadvantages of laptops, netbooks, tablets, smartphones, etc.? How do they really compare?

Tablets more for consuming media (video, text, etc.) while laptops are more for creation (desktop replacements). Netbooks are somewhere in between. On the other hand, some users do create a lot of content on their tablets. No local storage of documents on the iPad itself, unless she jailbreaks it. The iPad’s touch-screen keyboard is big enough for comfortable typing, much moreso than on an iPhone.

With more and more people having their own devices, will we even need to provide computer access in the future? UNL Library is discussing getting rid of the computer lab.

Public libraries must keep their computer access. When people get laid off, the first thing they cut is internet access. The library’s computers and internet become critical.

A lot of people are canceling their landlines and going mobile only.

It may become possible for public libraries to reduce the number of public computers.

There are websites that will make free mobile websites for libraries. Marcia Dority Baker provided links:

http://www.alatechsource.org/blog/2010/03/planning-for-a-mobile-website.html

http://www.unitymobile.com/index.html

http://www.mobisitegalore.com/index.html

http://mofuse.com/

Some librarians and library workers are using mobile devices at work, too. When in the stacks, they take a mobile device rather than a laptop. No need to return to desk to look something up in the catalog.

Small library using offline Follett software for ILS. Get records from the Library of Congress. Librarian quit. Librarian run entirely by volunteers, who have attended Basic Skills

NebraskaAccess – all content free to all Nebraska residents. Need password, available from NLC.

Emily exploring more options for putting cataloging classes online. Electronic Resources session is already available online.

What are we going to do with RDA? The new cataloging rules that will (maybe) replace AACR2. ALA info makes it sound like a done deal.

Conceptual framework based on FRBR. Nuts and bolts changes are minor. A few new fields. Abbreviations will be spelled out. Rule of three done away with. Copy catalogers won’t have to worry too much about this.

Catalogers will be thinking about things in different ways, but the actual way we do our work will not be dramatically changed.

Doing away with the GMD seems like a bad move. It was nice to have that information right in the title display.

RDA issue–it would be better to change how our catalogs display our data than to change how we create the data.

Many ILS vendors don’t have the new RDA fields available–software vendors will need to upgrade their systems to allow RDA fields to even exist, much less be used.

Most libraries (like most vendors) are kind of sitting back to wait and see. UNL is taking a more active role. Margaret Mering is really into RDA–she is a good resource for people with questions.

Some libraries using antique software, like Winnebego–the vendor no longer exists, so no tech support. Probably a lot of libraries are in similar situations.

Follett seems to work well for small libraries. Decent tech support.

About 20 years ago, a big project to automate small libraries around the state. The group used Follett.

Chinese books hard to find in LoC database. These are books printed in China, but not written in Chinese. Pretty, colorful–mostly children’s books. Have ISBNs, but not good ones. No catalog records available for these.

Cataloging cycle: things come in, you catalog them, and then they get weeded.

Hard to get rid of weeded books. Can’t sell or donate them. Put them on a table in the community center (or other place with a lot of traffic) and mark them free, and people take them.

Better World Books will pay for shipping. Check ISBNs against their database, and they’ll tell you if they want it. They send the boxes, etc. The only expense to the library donating books is time.

Volunteer-run library doing well. Getting lots of grants, able to buy books every week now. Can’t get accredited, because they don’t have a paid employee. Can’t get state aid unless they’re accredited. Open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays all day. Unofficially open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, if the volunteers happen to be there.

One thing that has helped their library, to get books to catalog, was to put out tablets for patrons to tell what they wanted. Then the library always buys the books patrons request. Keeps the students coming back to the library.

Some readers watch the UPS delivery van, so they know when the books they ordered arrive. Often requesting the books before they can be cataloged.

Emily’s recordings available for electronic resources, basic book cataloging, Dewey Decimal System, etc. at the Nebraska Library Commission.

One library has abandoned Dewey. Using a bookstore-like classification. Some things end up in generalities, because there’s no place for them.

How to promote interesting nonfiction books that don’t circulate? Put them in fiction, and they get checked out.

In small public library, get rid of old, ugly books, because patron’s won’t go in the section otherwise.

Blair Public Library has no nonfiction older than 2006. Library looks great and use has gone up.

Patrons like WWI, WWII, Vietnam War, tractor books, etc. Don’t seem to want biographies.

Comics (e.g. Garfield) placement in Dewey seems to be problematic. Not where the patrons look for them.

Use Books in Print database to find good nonfiction books for kids. Can limit to titles that have reviews, to aid in selection process.

Gumdrop Books (vendor) has sets of nonfiction books for K-6. Good way to get bundles of visually attractive sets for kids.

(We’ve gotten rather sidetracked from cataloging.)

Sky River is an Innovative offshoot, a company to rival OCLC. Only offers catalog records. No ILL component at this point. Union catalog–users of SkyRiver can see other users. OCLC has become rather expensive.

What’s going to happen to OCLC when/if everything becomes open source.

At least one person has to create a record. LC catalogs books, but not music, movies, etc.

SkyRiver is taking free records from OCLC and selling them to users.

Library that creates a record owns it. Puts it out in the world for anyone to use for free.

OCLC pays member libraries for contributions. SkyRiver does NOT pay for contributions. SkyRiver charges based on OCLC charges. They don’t give services or credits, and they charge for things you can get for free. Their only purpose seems to be to undercut OCLC.

On the flip side, OCLC has become a huge monopoly, gobbling up other library companies, including for-profit companies. It costs a lot of money to be an OCLC member, and OCLC pays no taxes. OCLC’s head makes a huge salary.

LibLime is an open source company that supported Koha, which is an open source ILS.
